Seniors Relationship Care Program
From childhood to death our relationships with family and other are among the most important items of happiness and health.
At Positive Solutions we recognise that many adult children have difficult relationships with their brothers and sisters or with their parent(s). We recognise that planning and communication to build bridges can be very difficult. Our trained mediators can assist people to make suitable decisions about ongoing communications and decisions on future care of your parent(s). The mediations (or facilitated meetings) act to empower the participants - they are confidential and private; they are forward planning and do not seek to blame or find wrongs. The mediators control the process and work with structure and care to assist the needs of the family. Mediations can involve friends or experts (such as medical or financial consultants) who may provide advice. Mediation is highly effective and successful. Agreements tend to ‘stick’ as parties design their own agreements.
The type of issues that can be mediated include:
Health and medical care decisions – who will look after Mum/Dad
Financial decisions – how will investments be handled
Family communications – how are people coping since Dad or Mum died, or, why can’t we work together?
Living arrangements – when to move into assisted care
Support and assistance for care providers
How to investigate if mediation, or facilitated meetings, would be appropriate for your family
First, contact Positive Solutions and organise for a confidential individual session (approx. 1 hour). This is to discuss your needs, hear about the process and assess if mediation is right for your situation.
We will then contact the other parties (with your permission) to see if they are willing to be involved.
Joint sessions (approx. 2 hours each) are the mediation sessions with all parties present (can include phone presence). Here we identify common interests and move toward agreements.
To cover some of the costs an hourly fee is charged. The fee is adjustable for income level or a family fee may be used.
