Child Inclusive Mediation
When parents separate, children often feel lost and confused. They commonly blame themselves for their parents' conflict and feel unheard.
While most children will eventually come to terms with separation, it has been found that protracted conflict and bitterness between parents can lead to ongoing difficulties in children.
Children cope best with separation when they maintain their relationship with both parents and extended families. They also need to maintain their bonds with brothers and sisters, as it is often these relationships which offer stability and support through this difficult period.
Child Inclusive Mediation is a way to give your children a voice in a safe and positive environment and provides the following opportunities:
gives children the opportunity to have a voice in decisions that affect them in the family;
allows children to express how they are feeling;
provides children with the opportunity to talk to a professional about how they are experiencing the separation/divorce; what questions they may have for their parents;
and what matters they would like the mediator to discuss with their parents.
Children are included in the mediation process only if both parents agree and the mediators consider it appropriate.
How does it work?
Parents begin the mediation process by firstly attending pre-mediations and completing mediation sessions.
If there is a presenting need for the children of the relationship to be involved, a child consultant will be called upon to speak with the children independently and provide the parents with feedback.
