THE BASIC GROUND RULES FOR PARENTING SUCCESSFULLY

  1. Respect each others privacy;
  2. Unless there is a real problem, don't interfere in the other's household;
  3. Extend common courtesy and manners as you would to a friend or workmate;
  4. Make appointments to discuss things;
  5. Check things out with the other and give them the benefit of the doubt before making assumptions;
  6. Search for solutions and not fault, when there are conflicts;
  7. Be businesslike and keep your feelings in check;
  8. Be trustworthy and follow through on your agreement;
  9. Concentrate on your relationship with your children;
  10. Let your former partner parent the children in their own way;
  11. Put things in writing.  Make sure those agreements are explicit and detailed as to time, place, cost etc;
  12. Be forward focused and leave the past behind;
  13. Make a pledge to yourself never to take a child away.
